The Lahore Biennale Foundation (LBF) and the Goethe-Institut, in further collaboration with Vasl, Pakistan, launched an open call in May 2016, for an eight-week artist residency, seeking two Germany-based artists and/or researchers interested in cross-disciplinary theory and practice related to cities and urban phenomena. Karachi and Lahore were chosen to house the winning artists. The call for applications closed on June 5, 2016 and the jury has selected two artists.

The objective of this residency, in both cities, is to encourage and facilitate a critical exploration of the urban and its peculiarities coupled with the myriad artistic possibilities within the wider frame of each individual’s practice and research approach.

The outcomes of the stay, scheduled between mid-October and mid-December 2016, will be presented at a consecutive programme of talks, workshops and exhibitions slated for November-December 2016. Selected work produced during the residency will also be featured at subsequent events.

Honi Ryan
Honi Ryan is an interdisciplinary artist with a nomadic social practice. Her work has intercultural concerns and deals with the present body in relationship to others and their environment. Working with long term social performance projects at the core of her practice, Ryan builds relationships as works of art by creating heightened encounters in everyday life — encounters between people and place — as a means of activating deep listening and deep presence through mindful techniques, as a living art practice.

Born in Melbourne Australia, and living and working in Berlin Germany, Ryan has exhibited and performed in more than 11 countries across Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia over the past decade.

Ryan has attended residencies and presented work internationally with both collaborative and solo projects, and in the past year her work has been supported by The Goethe Institute Barcelona, The National Trust of Australia, and Arteles Creative Centre in Finland. Ryan has presented her projects at art and philosophy conferences and in universities in the United States, Germany, and Australia.

Her undergraduate degree combined Visual Art with Experiential Design between the Köln International School of Design, Germany, and Sydney University, Australia, where she graduated her Bachelor of Visual Art with first class honours and was awarded the university medal in 2008. She went on to complete a Masters of Fine Art in Creative Practice with the Transart Institute in Berlin and New York in 2015. Her masters thesis was titled Gestures of Intent: Performance Art enacting peace through presence and participation, and was highly commended by the Transart Institute.

Honi Ryan is hosted by the Lahore Biennale Foundation in Lahore.
