Manisha Gera Baswani
Postcards from Home, 2018
Photographs/postcards, new commission
Manisha Gera Baswani (b. 1967, New Delhi, India) lives and works in New Delhi, India.
Baswani is a painter, photographer, and an occasional writer. Her work for LB01, Postcards from Home traverses the border and brings home the artist photographed. A total of 47 (the year of partition) Indian and Pakistani artists photographed by Baswani over the years constitute this project.
Photographed artists have a shared history with partition either personally or through family. Each postcard carries the image of the artist and the reverse carries a brief text or memory, that tugs at the heart of the artist either directly through stories narrated by their parent/s or grandparent/s of pre-partition India. The intent was to intrigue and invite viewers to these visual frames of nostalgia, to re-kindle love and connection wherever the postcards reach, and hopefully, to touch a cord and revive the shared connection of a common history.
Baswani completed her masters at Jamia Millia Islamia under the tutelage of A. Ramachandran. She held a solo exhibition of paintings at Sanat Gallery in Karachi in 2015 and exhibited recent works at the Gallery Espace solo booth at the 2018 India Art Fair.
